The purpose of the meeting is to focus on EU Member States’ contributions to UNIFIL and the conditions needed to make the operation a success.

The Presidency has convened an extraordinary meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, which will take place in Brussels on the afternoon of Friday, 25 August. The purpose of the meeting is to focus on EU Member States’ contributions to UNIFIL and the conditions needed to make the operation a success. The meeting will be chaired by Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja. The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, will attend. EU:n puheenjohtajavaltio on kutsunut koolle EU:n ulkoministerien ylimääräisen kokouksen, joka pidetään perjantai-iltapäivänä 25. elokuuta Brysselissä. Kokouksen tarkoituksena on keskustella EU:n jäsenvaltioiden panoksesta Unifil-joukkoihin ja edellytyksistä operaation onnistumiseksi. Kokousta johtaa ulkoministeri Erkki Tuomioja. YK:n pääsihteeri Kofi Annan osallistuu myös kokoukseen. Ordförandeskapet har sammankallat EU:s utrikesministrar till ett extra möte i Bryssel på eftermiddagen fredagen den 25 augusti. Syftet med mötet är att fokusera på EU-medlemsländernas insats i Unifil och förutsättningarna som krävs för att genomföra en lyckad operation. Ordförande för mötet är Finlands utrikesminister Erkki Tuomioja. Förenta nationernas generalsekreterare Kofi Annan deltar i mötet. Back

Finland’s EU Presidency : EU foreign ministers commit increased numbers of troops to Lebanon

The EU foreign ministers, meeting with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan today in Brussels, gave their full support to the swift implementation of the UN Security Council resolution 1701 and committed to forming the backbone of the enlarged UNIFIL operation in Lebanon, providing half of the expanded force.

”I will leave it to the countries themselves to state their individual figures”, said Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja, representing the EU Presidency, at a press conference. In many of them, as in my country, Finland, the decision on troop deployment will require parliamentary approval, he added.

Secretary-General Annan proposed that France lead the UN peace force in Lebanon until early next year, after which Italy would take the lead.

Finland, the EU Presidency, had convened an extraordinary meeting of the General Affairs and External Relations Council on Friday, 25  August, to boost EU Member States’ contributions to UNIFIL.

In their conclusions, the ministers expressed their strong will to see all parties in the region play a constructive role in implementing the UN resolution to stabilise the region. They also reiterated the EU’s determination to bring humanitarian relief to the people of Lebanon and underlined the urgency of lifting the air and sea blockade.

EU:n ulkoministerit antoivat perjantaisessa kokouksessaan Brysselissä täyden tukensa YK:n Libanon-päätöslauselman 1701 pikaiselle toimeenpanolle ja lupautuivat muodostamaan puolet laajennetuista Unifil-joukoista. YK:n pääsihteeri Kofi Annan osallistui kokoukseen.

”Jätän jäsenmaiden omaksi tehtäväksi ilmoittaa tarkat luvut”, totesi EU:n puheenjohtajavaltiota edustava ulkoministeri Erkki Tuomioja tiedotustilaisuudessa. Monissa jäsenmaissa, kuten Suomessa, päätös rauhanturvajoukkojen lähettämisestä vaatii parlamentin hyväksynnän, hän lisäsi.

Pääsihteeri Annan kertoi ehdottavansa Ranskaa YK:n rauhanturvajoukkojen johtoon Libanoniin ensi vuoden alkuun saakka, jonka jälkeen johto siirtyisi Italialle.

EU:n puheenjohtajavaltio Suomi kutsui ylimääräisen yleisten asiain ja ulkosuhdeneuvoston koolle perjantaina 25. elokuuta kiirehtiäkseen jäsenvaltioiden osallistumista Unifil-operaatioon.

Päätelmissään ulkoministerit korostivat voimakkaasti kaikkien osapuolten rakentavaa osallistumista alueen  vakauttaumiseen tähtäävän YK:n päätöslauselman toimeenpanoon. Ministerikokous myös toisti EU:n aiemman päätöksen pitää huolta humanitaarisen avun perillemenosta Libanonin asukkaille ja painotti ilma- ja merisaarron pikaista lopettamista.
